To support a balcony or similar you can - instead of using normal fences etc. - build this construction.
Tip: In some resource packs, the charcoal block is also perfect instead of the grey wool.

Personally, I don't think those columns look very nice, but that may just be my building style.
They don't exactly fit well in my world, but the idea is genius!
