A ladder that runs across several blocks in the air (on invisible barriers).
The ladders are simply built on top of barriers.
Barriers can be obtained with the command /give @p Barrier
However, it is not meant for Suvival-mode, because you can only
through cheats.

You could build an underwater tunnel out of barriers, just as an idea.
But it's not really creative...
It also works when you stack threads on top of each other behind it 😛
