Renamed funnels can be used to easily create signage for trails.
Instructions:
Material:3 fence posts
8 Frame
one funnel per frame used
Anvil to rename the funnels
You use the anvil to rename the funnel to what you want to designate. Put the funnel into the frame and you can rotate it with a right click. The tip of the funnel points in the direction you want to point.

@Snuffer no. But you could throw the funnel on the floor, stand next to it and run the command "/entitydata @e[type=Item,r=2] {CustomNameVisible:1b}".
no, the text only appears if you aim at it with the crosshairs. unfortunately i don't know what the command above my comment does. alternatively to the funnels you can of course also use real arrows (from the weapon arsenal), but unfortunately they are always in a diagonal position.
