Sure, obsidian isn't as easy to find as dirt, but it's not nearly as difficult. If it goes according to what I can have immediately, then even the stone steps are too hard, for that you need a hoe and a stove.

I would make obsi for it with lava, water and redstone dust. So I also build my portals. Make but behind the portals (so in the middle) lava there. It's a bit brighter.

find lava under the earth (which is fast with stripmining), water on it and you have obsidian. But let's be honest: This thing doesn't make any light?!
