This laser beam is perfect for an alien invasion.
To add the beam, you have to build a beacon block about three blocks deep into the ground so you can't see it so well later. On top of this you build another red glass block. To indicate devastation, you can move a few blocks around the beam, set fire (Netherstone) and place grass and stone blocks in the air.

It both uses colored beacon light, but the idea is quite different.
But, laser is light. So how can it destroy a larger area so unevenly?
