A bed in the ceiling lets light into the room. The only thing you see in the room is a slight indentation in the ceiling.
Of course, if you use non-oak boards for the ceiling design, it will stand out more.
It's basically a bug, so it might be fixed one day.

The bug has just been fixed in 1.8 (not yet released).
However, beds still drop for me.
