Schrödinger's cat

This is Erwin Schrödinger's thought experiment recreated from quantum mechanics. If you close the lid (and make sure you don't hear or see the explosion) the cat is considered both dead and alive.

Since you don't know when the cat will step on the tripwire and kill itself, the cat is both dead and alive until you look.

This setup has almost no practical use, unless you want to get rid of cats or for a desperate attempt to teach physics to Minecraft players.

Instructions:

Since you can hear and see the explosion with TNT (turning off the sound and turning around helps against that), you could also kill the cat with a command block, but that's not as descriptive.

  1. As long as you don't look in it, the ocelot is alive... or not... or both at the same time... or a mixture of both. But since you could look in the files of Minecraft to see if it's still alive or not, Minecraft is certainly not the right place for quantum mechanics :D, but it's useful to make a lot of money on servers... And by the way, the cat is not macroscopic but microscopic, which should mean that the cat can NOT reach multiple states like in the comment above.
